ICE facility could mean more jobs for Sumner County

Wellington, Kan. — After years of looking into obtaining federal contracts to bring in extra revenue to the Sumner County Jail, an opportunity has made itself available and officials say it could be a game changer for the County.
Sumner County Sheriff Gerald Gilkey was sent a letter by the Department of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) which is looking for a regional civil detention facility to house illegal immigrants while their status is being evaluated.
ICE is looking for a stand alone open-air facility to hold about 300 to 400 beds with people filtering through the facility every 30 to 40 days. Right now a “hodge-podgeâ€
