Man Charged in Fatal Crash Makes 1st Court Appearance

JUNE 5, 2006 -- The man who police say is responsible for causing a fatal accident on Oleander Drive Saturday night makes his first appearance in court.

Martin Vazquez appeared via video link from the county jail on Monday.

He communicated with the help of an interpreter, asking for a court appointed attorney. Vazquez is charged with manslaughter and felony death by vehicle.

The accident on Saturday night killed Benedict Randolph of Greenville.

Vazquez is also charged with driving drunk and driving without a license.

Vazquez currently lives in Leland, but prosecutors say they're trying to establish his citizenship. Vazquez is being held in the New Hanover County Jail on a $350,000 bond.

Illegal immigrant indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges

WILMINGOTN -- We have startling new information about Martin Vazquez, the man police say was driving drunk when he hit and killed a Greensboro man in June.

Investigators say Vazquez slammed his pickup truck into Benedict Randolph's compact car as Randolph waited to pull out of a parking lot off Oleander Drive.

Authorities say Vazquez's blood alcohol content at the time of the accident was .23, more than twice the legal limit.

The Federal government has also put a hold on Vazquez after finding out he is an illegal immigrant.

Monday a grand jury indicted Vazquez on involuntary manslaughter charges. If convicted he will face about four years behind bars and then be deported to Mexico.
