OAKWOOD - President of Gainesville State College Dr. Martha Nesbitt said Monday during her State of the College address that undocumented immigrant students would be treated equally.

Dr. Nesbitt spoke during the annual Faculty and Staff Fall Breakfast during which an endowed scholarship in her name was announced. (See separate story)

"As you know we accept undocumented students to Gainesville State College," Dr. Nesbitt said. "We are mandated to do this if they meet our admissions requirements."

hem as we treat every other student, with no distinction."
"We want them to succeed, and hopefully someday they will find a way to become citizens."

Dr. Nesbitt said people and nations around the world are finding that managing diversity enriches them, if not it divides them.

She added that education's role is to provide equal opportunity and achievement for all students and preparing them for a diverse world.

The GSC president said the college could expect to absorb the growing wave of new students in underserved Northeast Georgia as part of the Board of Regents Strategic Growth Plan.

"I believe we should respond to that call, but I am going to insist that additional resources be made available rather than draw on our already strained resources," Dr. Nesbitt said.

She added that the Oconee campus of GSC is already at capacity with space and the main campus in Oakwood would be at capacity this fall.

"This is an issue that will need system support, whether more space involves leasing more property off campus or placing modular units on campus, that will be a Board of Regents decision," Dr. Nesbitt said.
