Rep. Michele Bachmann defended her recent critiques of Newt Gingrich Sunday calling the former House speaker a "memory-challenged professor."

"Professors don't like to be challenged, but I think in this case he's memory challenged," she said on "Fox News Sunday."

Responding to Bachmann's charge that Gingrich supports amnesty for illegal immigrants, Gingrich had said earlier he felt "sorry for someone who is so factually challenged."

But Bachmann didn't back down from her barb. "Newt Gingrich signed a letter in The Wall Street Journal, where in he was in full support of George Bush's immigration program, which was commonly referred to as amnesty," she said, adding that he also supported the DREAM Act.

She also attacked Gingrich for being "as establishment as you get," noting his Beltway address and ties to lobbyists.

The latest Des Moines Register poll has Bachmann in fourth place at 8 percent, and Gingrich in first at 25 percent.
