Man gets 21 years in migrant ambush that killed 2

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A Mexican man who participated in the ambush of a truck carrying 23 illegal immigrants south of Tucson last year that left two migrants dead has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Rosairo Humberto Araujo-Monares pleaded guilty last month to two counts of second-degree murder for his role in the March 30, 2007 shootings. He was sentenced on Monday.

Araujo-Monares admitted he was one of four men who waited in the desert for days to ambush a drug smuggling vehicle.

The men opened fire with assault rifles on the pickup carrying the migrants and two human smugglers after mistaking it for a drug-running vehicle. A man and his sister-in-law from Chiapas, Mexico were killed.

A second man also pleaded guilty but the other two escaped.
