A man wanted by Santa Ana police for rape was arrested Monday by Border Patrol agents after he entered the country illegally from Mexico, authorities said.

Ismael Calixto Ortiz, 30, is suspected of entering the Santa Ana home of a woman whom he didn't know through an unlocked sliding glass door on Jan. 9, 2005, at about 2:30 a.m., said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana police. Ortiz went into a room where the woman was sleeping with her children and raped her, then threatened to return and kill the children if she reported the incident to police, Bertagna said.

Ortiz was identified based on DNA evidence recovered during the investigation, Bertagna said.
Ortiz, a Mexican national, was arrested at about 2:20 a.m. Monday in Imperial Beach, the U.S. Border Patrol said in a news release.

A Border Patrol agent encountered Ortiz in a brushy area north of the border along with another Mexican man who was also in the country illegally, the release said.

The agent arrested the other man, but Ortiz ignored the agent's orders and resisted arrest, the release said. A second agent arrived and Ortiz tried to grab an agent's holstered handgun, the Border Patrol said. The agent held onto his gun and together both agents were able to subdue and arrest Ortiz, the Border Patrol said.

When Border Patrol agents discovered the Santa Ana warrant for Ortiz, he was turned over to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the Border Patrol said.

Santa Ana detectives went to San Diego to interview Ortiz, Bertagna said. Ortiz will remain in San Diego until he has been processed on federal charges, then will be returned to Orange County, Bertagna said.
