MO: Blunt proposes laws to stop illegal immigration
Blunt proposes laws to stop illegal immigration
Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 at 4:39 p.m.
(AP) -- Gov. Matt Blunt has proposed a series of new state laws to crack down on illegal immigration.
Blunt wants the legislature to require employers such as school districts and local governments to check the immigration status of all new hires.
During a visit Monday to suburban st. Louis, he also suggested tougher penalties for contractors who employ illegal immigrants and for anyone found transporting illegal immigrants.
The Democrats Monday trashed Blunt's immigration agenda.
They note that he once supported a White House immigration plan that included amnesty.
And they say he has failed to punish people who employ illegals by blocking their access to tax credits.

Combating Illegal Immigration

Missouri Governor, Matt Blunt, announced his new proposals in the fight against illegal immigration. The Governor claims that the federal government simply isn't doing enough to combat illegal immigration, so he's taking matters into his own hands by introducing four proposals that are expected to be debated in the House and Senate early next year. At a news conference today, Blunt said he has already passed legislation that's working in the fight against illegals, such as checking the legal status of those sent to jail, and providing a way for state law enforcement to back federal immigration laws. But he says, more needs to be done. "Immigration should be primarily a federal responsibility, we can't stand by while Washington fails to act, so i've taken a number of steps this year to combat illegal immigrants," said Blunt. "I think that Washington D.C. Is not doing their job so the states are being forced to take this over," claims Marilyn Ruestman, Representative for District 131. The Governors first point is for the state government to check the legal status of all new employees. His second point would penalize employers who are exploiting illegal labor. The third point prohibits local governments from making policies that limit local law enforcement from talking with the federal government about immigration violations. Blunt said his final point may be the most important out of each new proposal. It would criminalize those who transport illegal immigrants into the state to work. Representative Marilyn Ruestman believes each of the four pieces of legislation will pass the House and Senate next year.
