CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Democrats, who outpaced Republicans in new signups leading up to the Jan. 19 presidential caucuses, now have 44,676 more party members than the Nevada GOP, according to a report from the secretary of state.

The report shows there now are nearly 1.3 million active and inactive voters registered in Nevada. That includes 523,708 Democrats and 479,032 Republicans. The figures are preliminary and will be updated in early March.

Between December and now, the Democrats' total went up by nearly 24,000, while the GOP total went down by about 1,400.

Democrats now account for 42 percent of the active and inactive voters, while Republicans account for 38 percent. The rest are mainly nonpartisans, along with various splinter-party members.

The overall voter registration totals reflect the record turnouts at both Democrat and Republican presidential caucuses last month.

Democrats got 24,000 new voters and the Republicans lost 1,400.

Remember, the pro-Obama Culinary Workers Union fought to keep a caucus plan that allowed the nearly 200,000 casino and hotel employees on the Las Vegas strip to take part at caucus sites in their workplaces -- a plan thought to give Obama an edge after the union endorsed him last week. Workers attending the hotel caucuses had to provide identification showing them to be a shift worker and sign a declaration stating they can't attend their "home" caucus because of their work schedule.
