Immigration, even in Wisconsin politics, is hot election topic

The leading Republican candidates for governor say Wisconsin should do more to enforce federal immigration law such as penalizing businesses that hire workers who are here illegally. But critics say that could have an outsize impact on rural areas, which rely on large numbers of immigrant laborers - many of them in the country illegally - to work on farms.

Still, doing nothing carries its own costs. Some fear competition for jobs in a tight economy. And to get a job, immigrants must have a Social Security Number, often someone else's that has been bought on the street.
