GREENBELT, Md. -- A former Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration employee has been sentenced to 40 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for unlawfully issuing state identification documents, often to illegal immigrants, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte sentenced James Edwin Harrell, 51, of Beltsville, on Monday.

Harrell used his position at MVA to provide identification cards and driver's licenses to applicants who did not have the documentation to legally obtain them, U.S. attorneys who prosecuted the case said.

Prosecutors said Harrell helped provide more than 150 unlawful identification cards, many for illegal immigrants, from May 2004 to February 2005.
