Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is defending his office's illegal immigration tip line saying it is helping to catch drug traffickers and human smugglers.

Arpaio said Wednesday that the telephone line led to the arrest in Mesa of Antonio Tapia Ortiz, who was detained after being found with 1 pound of cocaine and other illegal items.

The sheriff's office said the tip line, 602-876-4154, has been operating for several weeks and has led to the arrests of 80 illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigrants and crime have come into focus lately with the killing of a Phoenix police officer by an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Some Hispanic groups have criticized the hotline saying it encourages discrimination against Latinos.

"Those elected officials and activists who criticized me and my office, stating that it was a 'throwback to the Third Reich,' that the illegal immigration hotline would not be a success, and even portraying me as a member of the KKK, might be surprised by our achievements with the tip line," said Arpaio in a statement.

Now why do they think that? Do the trucks say call on illegal Latinos? NO its because 90% of the illegals ARE Latinos.

Every time they make that statement, it has to be challenged. It has to be challenged by "What do you see on the signs that says Latinos? Why would YOU jump to that conclusion? That statement sounds racist to me.

I think he is a real American hero, but I must say I am so surprised some of these groups sueing towns all over the country have not come after him!

Sheriff's office arrests illegals at day labor area in Queen Creek

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is stepping up his efforts against illegal immigrants that congregate at day labor sites.

The MCSO arrested 16 illlegal immigrants in Queen Creek on Oct. 4 after responding to complaints about the workers harassing some children near a school bus stop.

Arpaio's office arrested 34 illegals in Cave Creek earlier this month at day labor site near a church in Cave Creek.

The sheriff has set up an illegal immigration tip line (602-876-4154) for the public to report undocumented migrants and businesses that hire them.

The line has been criticized by Hispanic groups as being discriminatory.

Ya, now a guy who committed armed robbery is saying he did it because he lost his job and can't get work as an illegal. Of course the Hispanic guy didn't defend his actions but made the excuse WHY he did it. Oh brother!

Can I make an excuse for not paying my taxes to quit paying for these people.
