A sheriff's lieutenant turned up about 18 pounds of cocaine ---- with an estimated street value of $300,000 ---- in a car stopped at the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint late Saturday morning.

Deputies with the San Diego Sheriff's Department, working under a federal homeland security grant to target drug smugglers, stopped a newer model Dodge truck as it headed up Interstate 5 near the inspection station at about 11 a.m., sheriff's Lt. Dave Myers said in a press release.

Two men in the truck gave differing accounts of their destination, prompting authorities inspect the truck with a drug-sniffing dog. The canine detected drugs, and deputies found the stash, Myers said.
