Immigrants on the lam face new federal squad

Across South Texas, immigrant outlaws traditionally have not had much reason to worry about getting caught.

But starting next month, a new team of federal agents will be hitting the streets of San Antonio and other South Texas communities with the sole purpose of tracking them down and deporting them to their native countries.

The agents will form the new seven-member "fugitive operations team" run by the San Antonio office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, part of the Homeland Security Department and the country's second-largest federal investigative agency after the FBI.

Eighteen such teams operate across the country and 44 others will be added next year with the ultimate purpose of trying to catch more than 400,000 immigrants on the run from authorities, said Marc Moore, ICE field office director in San Antonio.
