Romero, 28, has appeared in more than a dozen television shows and movies, including alongside Jessica Alba in The Eye in 2008, but prosecutors say her biggest act was pretending to be a bride.

She and her husband were arrested at their separate Los Angeles homes and charged with marriage fraud, the US attorney's office said.

They accuse Romero of paying Kent Ross, 28, to marry her in 2005, so that she could become a US resident, and claim they never lived together.

An investigation into Miss Romero began after a jilted boyfriend, a fashion photographer who she began dating shortly after getting married, told immigration authorities that the marriage was a sham.

If convicted, Romero and Ross, a musician and pizza delivery man, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

They were both released after initial court appearances and a judge told Romero not leave the country and surrender her passport.

Miguel Unzueta, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent in Los Angeles, said: "This actor should have realised that posing as a bride for immigration purposes could land her a role in a real-life crime drama."
