U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized about 4,500 pounds of marijuana in Nogales Tuesday afternoon as it was being smuggled into the United States.
Officers screening commercial vehicles at the Mariposa commercial port-of-entry chose to closely inspect a tractor hauling a refrigerated trailer, according to a press release from Customs and Border Protection. A drug sniffing dog alerted the inspectors and an x-ray scan of the vehicle revealed abnormalities in the trailer.
A further search revealed 175 bales of marijuana weighing 3,864 pounds.
Then at about 3:30 p.m., officers at the commercial port facility stopped a GMC bobtail truck carrying computer parts and sent it for an inspection using the x-ray system. The officers again noticed abnormalities and found 639 pounds of marijuana hidden in boxes.
