CHANNEL 5 NEWS (KRGV, 2010) HIDALGO – Police in the city of Hidalgo believe more drugs will be smuggled into the Valley within the next few months.

Chief Vernon Rosser says right now crops of marijuana are being harvested south of the border.

Rosser says he expects more busts like the bust today.

Hidalgo police, following up on suspicious activity near the river, two men were arrested in two vans full of marijuana. Several other men managed to escape custody.

Rosser worries small departments like his are not getting the help they need from the federal government.

"If everyone would have additional manpower to fight this supposed war on drugs, I think we could make a severe dent here," says Rosser. "But until we're given that opportunity and recognition for what we do, it's not going to happen."

The Hidalgo Police Department plans to continue applying for grant money even though they are often turned down.
