Voters still strongly believe that gaining control of the border should be the legislative priority.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of Likely U.S. Voters say gaining control of the border is more important in terms of immigration legislation that legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in the United States. Twenty-seven percent (27%) disagree and say legalizing the status of illegal workers is more important. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

These numbers are consistent with findings for years.

Voters are evenly divided over whether young people brought to this country illegally by their parents should be viewed as breaking the law. Making a distinction between illegal immigrants and their children is at the heart of the so-called DREAM Act that some in Congress are hoping to pass before the end of the lame duck session.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Voters say controlling the border should be the legislative priority over legalizing illegal immigrants already in the United States, Rasmussen Reports said.

Survey results released Tuesday indicated 65 percent of likely U.S. voters said gaining control of the border is more important immigration legislation than legalizing the status of undocumented workers already in the United States, Rasmussen Reports said. Twenty-seven percent said legalizing the status of illegal workers is more important.

Seventy-nine percent of Republicans and 67 percent of voters who didn't declare a party affiliation said securing the border is the more important element of any such immigration-related legislation. That view also is held by 50 percent of Democrats, while 43 percent said they held the opposite view, Rasmussen Reports said.

Sixty-two percent of all voters, regardless of party affiliation, said they believe the policies and practices of the federal government encourage people to enter the United States illegally, results indicated.

Results are based on a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely voters conducted Thursday and Friday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.

Awww poor children. When politicians start talking about children somebody is going to get screwed.

Well if it's any consolation we don't want to charge the child with a crime or anything mean like that but they do need to leave and return to where they belong. We'll even supply the buses and a samich for the trip.

To stop illegal immigration we have to vote all the Democrats out and some Republicans and independents. You see Reid, Pelosi, Obama, etc, they all support amnesty for illegal aliens and provide tax dollars to pay for their expenses. We must stop providing social services to illegal aliens and they will leave. Also we must enforce the laws to stop illegal immigration. WE do not want to have illegals here. So let's enforce the laws and vote all the Democrats, in particular, out.

Like I told the moderator here. I've been a member of ALIPAC for 6 years. How many have crossed the border since then? How many anchor babies have been born since then?

Do you know that the government brings in 250,000 a MONTH legally and that doesn't count all the other sneaky ways they get them here. Add that to the 22,000,000 illegal immigrants!

I believe they are stalling while these people break in and keep having children.
