Republicans discuss immigration reform

Rick Hickey, vice president, Oregonians for Immigration Reform, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Lincoln County Republicans, at noon Tuesday, April 10 at the Shilo Inn, Newport. The meeting is open to the general public. An optional lunch is available.

Participants will discuss "The Sensible Immigration Reform Legislative Package" introduced by Republican State Representative Linda Flores. This legislative initiative includes:

HB 2680 - requires prospective voter registrants to provide proof of citizenship.


HB 2681- bars state from hiring or entering into contract with employer of illegal aliens.

HB 2682- gives law enforcement in Oregon more latitude and flexibility to detain violators of federal immigration laws.

HB 2683- creates crimes of slavery and sexual slavery of a minor.

HB 2684- makes English official language of Oregon.

HB 2685 - grants those here legally access to state benefits. Illegal immigrants would be entitled only to benefits currently allowed by federal law.

HB 2686- brings Oregon into compliance with the Federal REAL ID Act. Proof of legal presence required for drivers' license or ID card, as well as verification of identity, date of birth, address, and other related documents.

HJR 20- directs the State Employment Department to participate in the federal H2A Visa program for temporary agricultural employment.

HJM- Resolution requesting that the federal government fully reimburse the states for the cost of housing illegal immigrants in Oregon's prison system.
