Mexican Ex First Lady Amassed Fortune

Mexico, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Under the headline, "Marta Sanhagun Arrived Poor, and Left Loaded with Jewels," Mexican newspaper El Universal revealed Monday that the wife of former Mexican President Vicente Fox has accumulated a great fortune.

The daily claimed it had access to the property declaration of the Mexican former first lady, who in 2001 declared no property or jewels and now states her jewels are worth more than 82,000 dollars.

El Universal recalled that Sanhagun began her presence at Los Pinos (presidential house) as a presidential spokeswoman and ended as the wife of Vicente Fox (2000-2006).

The newspaper's investigation showed that Sanhagun acquired a black and white pearl necklace for 20,000 dollars, mentioned several properties bought by her in Celaya, Guanajuato State, and noted her three bank accounts held little more than 150,000 dollars in 2000, but 280,000 dollars in 2004.

Fox and Sanhagun are under investigation by a Mexican Deputy Chamber committee following denunciations by opposition parties of possible illegal enrichment.
