Cantor supports Culpeper effort to crack down on illegals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor is lending his support to an effort in Culpeper to crack down on illegal immigration.

The 7th District Republican says he's following the debate over the issue.

The debate drew attention when Town Council member Steve Jenkins began an effort to target landlords and employers who house or hire undocumented residents. Jenkins would also like to see English designated as Culpeper's primary language.

Cantor sent a letter on Wednesday to town and county leaders, one day after the county board of supervisors voted to contact him. Cantor's letter offers help and calls illegal immigration "a national crisis that must be addressed at all levels of government."

In his letter, Cantor said he doubts the Senate will take action on the issue until after November's elections.

Jenkins said that he was pleased Cantor is offering help. He says he believes "right will prevail."

A meeting called by Jenkins last weekend on the topic drew more than 200 people and became contentious. About 100 people sympathetic to immigrants marched downtown during the meeting.
