Eight percent fee possible on money transfers to Mexico

Many people who use money transmission businesses to wire money to their relatives in Mexico will soon have to pay extra for the process.

It's a bill that would require people to pay an eight percent fee on money transmissions to Mexico, Central or South America.

As written in the bill, the money made from these fees would go to the indigent health care support account.

"It sounds like a really good idea," said Shari Dirkx.

Dirkx is in favor of this bill, but not without some reservations.

"If the money would go where it's supposed to go...if it really ended up in health care, but i think that would take a lot of finagling to get it there," said Dirkx.

But others have bigger reservations about the bill.

"I think it's a big hit for Hispanics that come here to work," said Eliesas Mendoza.

The fee would only apply to undocumented immigrants.

Citizens can apply for a refund of the fee after showing proof of citizenship which leads some to believe this bill is made to discourage undocumented immigrants from living in Texas.

"There's a lot of money transmissions to Mexico from here-and the government should be more considerate," said Manuel Diaz.

Diaz said those who send money to Mexico contribute their money here in the United States as well and the economy could be affected if this law passes because those who need to send money to Mexico will be making the sacrifice to also pay the fee and won't have the money to spend on other things here in the U.S.

"I just don't think the fee increase is fair," said Diaz.

On Monday, the house heard testimony on this bill, but as of now, it is pending in committee.

Oh please! How much more consideration do you want? OUR Government turns a blind eye to your very presence here! OUR government allows you to earn a living, while AMERICANS are unemployed to the tune of 27 MILLION! OUR government allows you to prosper beyong your wildest dreams! In all honesty it must be wonderful to have enough left over from your weekly check to send to another Country; aw jeez I forgot, YOU don't get a check do you? YOU aren't expected to PAY tax dollars to up-keep your entire family here in the US, that's OUR job.

If I had a say in this matter you would be paying 100% in transmission fees! Every dime you send out is ill gotten gains in my book!

I've suggested this idea for some time it would be one way to collect some money for emergency health care given to illegals, the Mexican government could reimburse its people on their end if they wish, (like I'm sure that would happen).

An 8% tax on money that's essentially stolen or ill-gotten doesn't seem too harsh to me.

8 percent is not enough!

it needs to be like 15 percent and for those who are legal, 10 percent.that way they can start paying back the people of texas for all their fraud and abuse at hospitals and when applying for state monies

I personally think 8% is way to little and think 50% is much more reasonable. But then hey, if you don't like 8% Manuel and Eliesas, you can always carry your undocumented butts back to Mexico.

Take 50 percent and take the revenues to BUILD THE DAMNED FENCE. Now that makes sense.

All personal money transfers to Mexico should be stopped. Exception is a verified emergency. Business to business transfers in form of invoiced order should be allowed but monitored and traced as well. If that cannot be done the charge should be 60% of the amount to be sent.
