SUSSEX: Dozens arrested in alleged ID fraud scheme
    Associated Press

GEORGETOWN — An alleged identity fraud scheme has led to the indictment of three Sussex County residents and the arrest of 28 more.

Joan Santiago, Oscar Laines and Hugo Lopez-Olquin are among those charged with buying Social Security cards and Puerto Rican birth certificates and distributing them to illegal immigrants downstate to help them get jobs and government benefits.

The arrests followed a yearlong investigation. Twenty-seven of those arrested face deportation.

Delaware U.S. Attorney Colm Connolly says more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

JOINT FEDERAL INVESTIGATION NETS DOZENS OF ARRESTS ON SALE AND USE OF FRAUDULENT IDENTITY DOCUMENTS

Colm F. Connolly, United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement , and the United States Postal Inspection Service today announced the initial arrests resulting from a year-long investigation into the illegal sale and use of valid Puerto Rican birth certificates and Social Security cards in Delaware.

The joint investigation targeted several vendors/brokers who transported various identity documents from Puerto Rico to the lower Delaware Hispanic community. According to indictments returned by a federal Grand Jury last week, these documents were ultimately used to satisfy documentary requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act as it relates to employment. Moreover, once in receipt of these documents, individuals could fraudulently obtain all the rights and privileges of a U.S. citizen, including gaining employment, voting, purchasing firearms and obtaining valid passports to access U.S. borders.

As a result of the investigation to date, three individuals have been indicted, a fourth individual has been arrested on a criminal complaint, and another twenty-seven individuals have been arrested on administrative immigration charges.

The amount of fraud and gang activity FINALLY being addressed is more than alarming. While I am happy that they are finally getting up off of their {MOD EDIT} and doing their jobs, I am very angry that our government has allowed this corruption to sink so deep into our society that it will be more than a decade before we make a dent in this mess.

My heart goes out to all of those families who have lost loved ones at the hands of an illegal alien. I really wish those family members would ban together and sue the hell out of the US and South American goverments.

The more I read the more outraged I get.

Meanwhile, the ringleader, Mr. Santiago, is only being held on home confinement.
