Va. Congressman Fears Election Of 'Many More Muslims'
WRC-TV
2:50 p.m. EST December 20, 2006
WASHINGTON - A Virginia congressman has warned that "many more Muslims" will be elected demanding to use the Quran unless immigration is tightened. Republican Rep. Virgil Goode made the comment in a letter to constituents who had written in about Congressman-elect Keith Ellison's decision to use the Quran at his ceremonial swearing-in.
"I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way," Goode wrote.
Should Goode Apologize?
"The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran," he said. "I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America."
Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, is the first Muslim elected to Congress. He was born in Detroit and converted to Islam in college.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group, called on Goode to apologize for the letter.
"Representative Goode's Islamophobic remarks send a message of intolerance that is unworthy of anyone elected to public office," said Corey Saylor, legislative director for CAIR. "There can be no reasonable defense for such bigotry."
Saylor said Goode's remarks follow a recent commentary by radio talk show host Dennis Prager, a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Prager that swearing an oath on the Quran "undermines American civilization." CAIR has asked President George W. Bush to remove Prager from the taxpayer-supported council.
A spokesman for Goode said no apology was forthcoming, and that the congressman stands by the letter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Virginia congressman will not apologize for writing that without immigration reform "there will be many more Muslims elected to office demanding the use of the Quran," his spokesman said.
Republican Rep. Virgil Goode's letter to constituents also warns that without immigration reform "we will have many more Muslims in the United States."
Spokesman Linwood Duncan said Goode's letter was written in response to complaints his office received about Minnesota Rep.-elect Keith Ellison's request to be sworn in using the Quran.
Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress.
Goode's office released the letter to CNN Wednesday.
In it, Goode wrote, "When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Quran in any way.
"The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Quran.
"We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country.
"I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped."
He added, "The Ten Commandments and 'In God We Trust' are on the wall in my office. A Muslim student came by the office and asked why I did not have anything on my wall about the Quran.
"My response was clear, 'As long as I have the honor of representing the citizens of the 5th District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, the Quran is not going to be on the wall of my office.' "
The Council on American-Islamic Relations asked Goode to apologize.
"Rep. Goode's Islamophobic remarks send a message of intolerance that is unworthy of anyone elected to public office," the council's Corey Saylor said in a statement. "There can be no reasonable defense for such bigotry."
Duncan told CNN that Goode stands by his comments.

God forbid someone speaks the truth, then they are the enemy. Screw Islam and their supporters. If they don't like the truth they can leave.
That congressman who wants to be sworn in by the Koran should be recalled. In fact he should have never been voted in. What was Minnesota voters thinking? Oh that's right, same group of morons who voted for Jesse Ventura.

Valid questions someone should ask Rep Ellison,
which are asked of other groups with fundamentalist views,
by liberals & people of good faith worried about religious &
civic freedoms:
- Do you believe in the subjugation of women?
- Would you like to see laws based on your religious views?
- Do you believe in educational segregation for members of
your religion using public funds, ie charter schools?
- Do you repudiate the racist views of your former mentor, Farakhan?
- Doesn't a strict view of Islam require US to be under religious law?
- Etc, etc.
The press doesn't have the courage at home, but lots of stories
when press freedoms are attacked (the cartoon killings in
Netherlands.) I believe it's the only way we're going
to get traction with this issue by showing the hypocrisy of
the media on accurately portraying the issue. I'm waiting
for a clever person to ask Ellison what he thinks of the freak
who gunned down the film maker Van Gogh. I'm sure Ellison will
asked his response to future acts of terrorism. Should be interesting.
