Man suspected of murder in Mexico arrested in Santa Ana
By SEAN EMERY / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
SANTA ANA – A man suspected of stabbing a person to death in Mexico more than two years ago was arrested Wednesday after detectives learned that he was in Santa Ana, police said.
Family members of a man who was killed in an August 2009 stabbing in San Juan del Rio in the Mexican state of Queretaro recently contacted Santa Ana police to inform them that the man suspected in the slaying was in Orange County, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
Investigators learned that the man suspected in the killing, who they identified as Jose Miguel Gonzalez Alegria, 26, was staying at a home in the 1600 block of South Towner Street, Bertagna said.
They also discovered that Alegria was wanted on three outstanding warrants, one for domestic violence and two for traffic violations, Bertagna added.
Homicide detectives, with the assistance of strike force officers, conducted surveillance of the home before taking Alegria into custody Wednesday.
Alegria was booked on the three outstanding warrants, Bertagna said, and detectives contacted Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials about the homicide.
Immigration officials have put a hold on Alegria, who is believed to be in the country illegally, Bertagna said.
Detectives are now working with immigration officials, the U.S. Marshals and Mexican authorities in an effort to return Alegria to Mexico to face murder charges.
