Five Immigrants in Peñitas Crash Released from Hospital

Five Immigrants in Peñitas Crash Released from Hospital

    Updated: March 28, 2008 12:08 PM PDT

Action 4 News has learned that five illegal immigrants who were injured in a fatal smuggling attempt in Peñitas have been released from the hospital.

Three immigrants were killed when a pickup truck carrying 20 people got in an accident with an SUV off Expressway 83 Thursday morning.

Fourteen immigrants were taken to various hospitals but investigators reported that five immigrants were released from medical care on Thursday.

But officials from U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE)told Action 4 News that those immigrants and others are witnesses in a federal investigation into the incident.

ICE agents and local police are trying to learn the identity of the driver who reportedly fled the scene.

He faces federal human smuggling charges that are expected to be enhanced due to the deaths and injured immigrants
