Three Iraqi men claiming to be Christians were caught in Texas after entering the U.S. illegally.
FBI agents said the men, in their early 20s, said they are afraid of facing persecution if returned to Iraq, reported KRGV-TV in Brownsville, Texas.
Eleven Iraqis have been caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally since October.
The men, who are being held for questioning, were detained Saturday near the Los Indios International Bridge near Harlingen, Texas, the station said.
They previously were arrested in Mexico carrying Greek passports and were held for a month for entering Mexico illegally.
Mexican authorities reportedly released the men, however, and told them to "go north."
In January, Mexican officials said they arrested four illegal-alien Iraqis trying to sneak across the border into the U.S..
Acting on an anonymous tip, police found the four aliens on a bus in Navajoa, about 375 miles south of the Arizona border, Mexico's attorney general's office said.
The Associated Press reported at the time that though many illegal-alien Iraqis have been captured in Mexican territory en route to the U.S. border, none had been found to have had any links to terrorism.

Released and told to go north? What the heck is Mexico doing here!!! That is the same thing they must be doing with all others who enter their country illegally from any other countries in the world. They are too cheap to fly them back to where they came from when they deport them, so they must be dropping them at the US border.
Freedom isn't free... Don't forget the men who died and gave that right to all of us....

Iraqis' long journey to the U.S.
Friday, May 05, 2006 Posted: 06:38 PM
Trip took more than two years
BROWNSVILLE – Three men crossed the U.S. border into the Valley last weekend.
We’re told the men left Iraq two and a half years ago. They first went to Syria, then to Greece. They got fake passports in Greece from a flea market. With their Greek passports, the men traveled to Spain. Later, they came to Guatemala and made their way north.
Their lawyer, Humberto Yzaguirre, said, “I'm pretty certain they would stop somewhere, get work, pay their way to the next stop. It's a long journey, but I think that goes to show their general fear of the situation.”
Yzaguirre responded to speculation the men were terrorists. “These gentleman were not terrorists. They're coming here because they fear for their lives from actual terrorists.” The FBI has confirmed the men are not suspected of being involved with terrorists.
Yzaguirre says they are Christians and needed to get away from threats against them in their own country. “They were persecuted, threatened just because of their religion; because they believe in God and not in Allah,” he said.
Their application for political asylum is crucial. They claim deportation back to Iraq could be a death sentence.
The Iraqis have also told authorities they have relatives in Michigan and California.
We’re told people applying for political asylum are usually detained until their application is approved. The FBI conducts a thorough background check. They say it is the applicant’s burden to prove the facts, including their claims of religious persecution. The process can take up to a year.

Iraqis sentenced in court

Three Iraqis pled guilty to crossing the border illegally
BROWNSVILLE – Three Iraqis received the maximum sentence for crossing the border illegally.
The Iraqis pled guilty to the charge. They say they came to the United States to seek asylum from their home country. They were caught near the Los Indios International Bridge last weekend.
We’re told the men claim to be Christians who were persecuted by Muslims in Iraq. A Brownsville federal judge questioned why they didn’t seek asylum before entering the country.
Judge Felix Recio says the men could have gone to the American Consulate or any international bridge. Since they didn’t, he gave them the maximum sentence of six months in federal prison.
Recio told the Iraqis their stay in prison would give them time to apply for asylum.

I have Iraqi friends who are Chaldean Christian. I also have Persian friends who are Christian. They are indeed persecuted by Muslims. I sincerely hope that refugee status can be afforded these Chaldeans, and others who have found themselves in the no-man's land of civil war .

It seems odd to me that 11 have been caught since october. How de we know they are really Christians and not terrorists using that as a cover?

My question, also. Why are we so quick to buy their story.
Surely there was somewhere else along their ' 2 1/2 year journey' they could have found safety.
But haven't we been in Iraq for more than 2 1/2 years??? They seem to be talking about leaving after Americans arrived.
Did I get the times correct?
I personally think this bears looking into. Do we know it took them that long? Do we know they are Christians? I was surprised to learn there was such a large, relatively speaking, group of Christians in Iraq. They can't have been persecuted too badly and why leave after the Americans came?
Why after all we have had happen and what is still going on, do Americans just buy any story that is handed to them?

We have to begin to be a little wiser about these things, we have to get develop a little survival instinct here.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
