    Lou Dobbs Tonight
    Tuesday, September 9, 2008

It’s day two of Lou Dobbs’s Independent Convention. All week,
we’ll be focusing on the issues ignored by the major party
candidates—the issues that matter to ordinary Americans. Here
are some of the stories we’ll be reporting on:

    * Since Mexican President Felipe Calderon started his crackdown
on drug cartels and corrupt law enforcement two years ago, more
than 4,000 people have been killed. The death toll among law
enforcement has topped 500. Kidnappings and violence are
spreading across the border, and now the AP reports Mexican
cartels have green-lighted hits against targets in the U.S.
We’ll talk to Phoenix police about becoming the kidnapping
capital of the nation and the rapid increase in other crimes
linked to Mexico the city is coping with.

    * The country is awash in red ink. Our national debt is more
than $9 trillion. At the same time, millions of American
families and individuals are in debt due to the policy failures
of the Bush Administration, while the campaigns are making
sweeping promises and generalizations about prosperity for all
Americans. We’ll take a closer look at the policy lapses that
have created this disaster and how the presidential candidates
are responding—or failing to respond—to this national debt
    crisis.

    * It’s been more than 40 years since Americans were first
confronted with our dependency on foreign oil imports. Yet,
neither presidents nor Congressional leaders during that time
have done anything to move us toward energy independence.
Candidates McCain and Obama say they will do something about
our dependency but their approaches are mired in arguments over
whether to drill or not drill off-shore and whether to build or
not build nuclear power plants. How about a reality check on
where our energy supplies come from now and what would it take
    to change the mix?

Lou’s nationally-syndicated talk radio show, The Lou Dobbs
Show, debuted this spring. Join us weekdays from 3-6 p.m.
Eastern for a look at news and politics aimed at independent
thinkers. Visit LouDobbsRadio.com to check your local listings
    or listen live online.

Today, Election Day is 56 days away and counting, and as the
latest poll numbers make abundantly clear, it’s a brand new
race. Today we’ll be talking to Democratic strategist Robert
Zimmerman. Lou will discuss education reform with attorney and
author Kevin Chavous. And Mark Kirkorian will discuss his new
book, “The New Case against Immigration: Both Legal and
    Illegal.â€
