Kyl: Immigration reform dead for this year
FYI, but let's not let our guard down. The OBL can try another amnesty attempt at any time (e.g., Joe Baca's 5-year 'forever' visa amnesty scheme). And note how Kyl is basically saying that after some more token action at the border, there will likely be another amnesty attempt.

Kyl: Immigration reform dead for this year
BLAKE MORLOCK
Tucson Citizen
U.S. Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl told Tucson business leaders Thursday that immigration reform is dead for the rest of the year.
Presidential and electoral politics combined with the loud public rebuke of efforts toward comprehensive reform last year has sucked the political will out of the Capitol Hill to deal with any issue other than border security, Kyl said.
Kyl made his first public appearance in Tucson since he was selected as the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, when he talked to about 300 people at a Tucson Convention Center luncheon hosted by the Tucson Metropolitian Chamber of Commerce.
"Wherever I go people want to ask me about the prospects of immigration reform," Kyl said. "The quick answer is: There are none." Once the public sees action at the border it may be more receptive to addressing the illegal immigrants here now and guest worker programs, he said.
In general, not much will be accomplished in 2008 because politically difficult decisions will be postponed until after a new administration takes over on Jan. 20, 2009.
"This going to be a short legislative year because it's a political year," Kyl said.
But Kyl said that was not necessarily a bad thing and suggested the government should show restraint in addressing current economic problems.
He was critical of the recently approved $150 billion economic stimulus package because of the effect it would have on the deficit and other measure that may make business more apprehensive to invest.
"Let's be careful we do no harm," he said.

We don't just want to see action at the border, we have plenty of action now! WE WANT THE BORDER SECURED! I just do not understand how our President and our congress can send our young men and women half way around the world in defense of the United States and refuse to defend our National Borders and Enforce our Immigration Laws while at the same time warning our military, for their own safety, not to wear their uniforms when traveling to our southern borders.
