DOUGLAS — More than 50 illegal immigrants were captured and detained today after the apartment they were using was discovered by the Douglas Police Department.

The apartment, located at 337 G Avenue, was discovered as a result of a vehicle check at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Douglas Police Officer Tomas Romero spotted a suspicious vehicle on 19th Street and A Avenue. After checking on the plates of the 1999 yellow Chevy 3/4 ton pickup, it was discovered to be registered to a fictitious address in Mesa.

The truck was later discovered in front of the G Avenue apartment. When Romero began to check out the vehicle, someone came out of the front door of the apartment, and the officer began to question him. At that point, people started running out of the back of the three-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.

The police picked up as many as they could and kept the others in the apartment. It is estimated that there may have been as many as 70 people living in the house, which had the utilities on and television running.

For Douglas, this was the largest raid of illegal immigrants in any single location in recent memory, according to Markus Gonzalez of the Douglas Police Department.

The illegal immigrants who were caught were loaded onto a bus and taken away for questioning. The pickup was impounded.

The U.S. Border Patrol said it is investigating the incident but had no further comment Wednesday.

The Douglas Dispatch plans to have more on this story in its weekend edition.

Seventy people in a three bedroom house??? How did they all fit in there? Why didn't the neighbors notice? They must have, so why didn't they report it? Who wants to live next to that???

Sure wish the USBP would put my mind at ease and state that the illegals were being processed for deportation.

Used to be that I was confident the illegals that were picked up by the USBP were going to be processed for deporation. Now, with the continuing policy changes being forced by the Obama administration, I'm left wondering. I become especially concerned when there is no specific mention of deporation by the USBP.

I am surprised that none of the neighbors complained. Unless the area is filled with other illegal aliens. I would hate to see what the place looks like from the inside.

the police need to take videos of the filthy illegal alien flop houses, post them in the papers along with the names of the landlords and sleazy owners who rent thesse places out and make a fortune ....imagine if each one was paying just $100/month....that's $7,000 grand per month made by the sleazy profiteer of illegal immigration, in violation of immigration laws, local housing/occupancy codes, and health and safety violations. Gross.

Can you imagine this scene! Sounds like a bunch of rats fleeing a cat! How in the heck can you fit 50 people in a one apartment??? These people are disgusting! I can only imagine what that neighborhood looks like!

They were picking up as many as they could until Obamanez and Nastypolitano stopped all raids and other federal illegal immigration enforcement laws. We now officially are a lawless third world cesspool........
