OMAHA, Neb. - Dozens of illegal immigrants arrested in last week‘s meatpacking plant raids have been released for humanitarian reasons pending immigration hearings, a government official said Friday.

She wouldn‘t specify what other criteria the agency used to determine whether workers should be released for humanitarian reasons.

Detained workers were asked if they had minor dependents, Zuieback said.

He didn‘t know how many had been released for humanitarian reasons since the day of the raid or how many were released from plants raided in Cactus, Texas; Marshalltown, Iowa; and Hyrum, Utah.

A phone message left Friday seeking comment from Swift & Co. was not immediately returned.

Dozens sounds better than saying all have been released. I doubt any have been deported.

So much for Secretary Chertoff and President Bush's promise of no more catch & release. Illegal immigrant parents can and do flee with their dependent children.

They were not deported. The news stated they were given court dates and released. In other words they have already had time to go to their consulate and get a new Matricula Card in another name and disappear. They probably won't bother moving though. Why should they? Nobody will come after them when they don't show up for court.

In many ways these illegals have more rights then we do. If we commited a crime they certainly would not just release us on humanitarian reasons. And we certainly wouldn't be allowed to just go down and pick up a new ID under a different name.

This just means they had an attorney.
