MERRIMACK – Republican Congressman and potential presidential candidate Tom Tancredo of Colorado stopped by the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts yesterday and held a town hall-style meeting with students.

Tancredo admitted that securing the nomination would be a longshot, but said his presence would help spark the debate he believes is necessary.

"I really believe there is something missing now in the present slate of candidates," Tancredo said. "There's not a clear concise message of what conservative politics is." Tancredo addressed a variety of topics such as immigration, multiculturalism and assimilation, which he believes are important to the national debate among the candidates vying for their party's nomination .

"All of us can celebrate diversity but diversity can't be the only thing that holds us together," he said. "We should celebrate assimilation as much as we celebrate diversity."

Immigrants should learn English so that everyone will be able to communicate about many things, Tancredo said, including our differences.

"This has nothing to do with race or ethnicity," Tancredo said.

Tancredo also voiced his support for building a wall along the border with Mexico.

"I'm for building a wall. The border should be defended. I like the statement borders makes," he said.
