Suspected illegal immigrant waits to see if he’s deported

PROVIDENCE — Gustavo Cabrera rode across the U.S. border in a car trunk, sandwiched between four other men and breathing through a fist-sized hole. Hours later, the men raced from the car and hurled themselves onto a pile of people, hidden in a truck that rumbled on to Houston.

That was in 1984. Cabrera never saw Guatemala again.

In the two decades since, Cabrera built a life in Rhode Island based on shrouded identity and menial, dirty jobs. He packed fish and butchered chicken. He polished jewelry, sorted recyclables, shook vermin out of industrial laundry and scrubbed toilets.

He and his wife, who is a legal permanent resident, raised four children, whose honors certificates and sports trophies crowd their apartment shelves. Cabrera and his wife are proud that they put their children on the straight and narrow. He tells them, “Education is the key.â€

This shouldn't even be a case of IF.....more WHEN..

Someday, one of these news reporters should tell the story of an unemployed American who has lost a vocation to an illegal. Or of someone struggling to cope with a stolen identity.

Send the kids back too...if the sperm was not supposed to be in the country then the kids are null and void as citizens.

He knows this is a country of laws, but, he says, the immigration laws should be fixed.

Must be nice to pick and choose which laws you want to obey

I don't like that law....so fix it.....

28 years in this country and he still needs an interpreter. His wife's "small earnings" and he made $7.40 an hour, hmmm. How could they have affored having FOUR kids?!?!?! Le welfare?

I would have LOVED to have FOUR kids, but we limited ourselves to how many we could afford to support on the money we EARNED. This man and millions of illegal aliens like him reproduce like rabbits without a care in the world?!?! I wish I'd known I could have done the same thing years ago and had myself 4,5,6,8 kids! What the hell, our tax dollars are going to children of ILLEGAL ALIENS!!! What about OUR kids?!?!

IDs he has used for all the jobs, credit etc.

28 years and doesn't speak english, the sob story writer should have keep that part out. Housing? Section8? Foodstamps? Wic, kids medical?
drivers lic? phony ID to fly? Id to bank? vote? how many laws did he break in 28 years? Does he have a criminal record?

Low income tax credit and incentive check? you bet

More than 2 decades and still doesn't speak English...yes he really embrassed the American Dream....way to gain sympathy.
