Carly Fiorina, the Republican U.S. Senate nominee from California, has been hospitalized with an infection related to post-breast cancer surgery, Politico is reporting.

By Robert Deutsch, USA TODAYPolitico attributes the information to Fiorina's campaign.

Fiorina, 56,the former CEO of Hewlett Packard, is in a fierce contest with longtime incumbent Barbara Boxer, a Democrat. She has been taken to an unspecified hospital in Los Angeles to receive antibiotics, Politico indicated from a statement released by Deborah Bowker, Fiorina's chief of staff.

"While this will impact her campaign schedule today, Carly is upbeat and doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery and be back out on the campaign trail soon," Politico quotes Bowker as saying.

Fiorina was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2009 and has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to treat it. Fiorina's campaign says she remains cancer free.
