TIJUANA, Mexico (AP/CNS) — Several hundred Central American migrants have marched toward the international border crossing between Tijuana and California to pressure the U.S to hear their asylum claims.

The migrants carried hand-painted American and Honduran flags and chanted: "We are not criminals! We are international workers!"

A few dozen Mexican police with plastic riot shields stopped the migrants well ahead of the crossing on Sunday.

More than 5,000 migrants are camped in and around a sports complex in Tijuana after making their way through Mexico in recent weeks via caravan.

Many hope to apply for asylum in the U.S., but agents at the San Ysidro entry point are processing fewer than 100 asylum petitions a day.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says southbound lanes into Mexico at the San Ysidro port of entry were closed around 11:20 a.m., northbound vehicle traffic processing at San Ysidro is currently suspended, and pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro port of entry are also suspended. CBP says updates will be provided.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials closed southbound vehicle and pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro port of entry at noon Sunday amid protests around the migrant caravan.

Northbound vehicle traffic processing at San Ysidro is also currently suspended, and the pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro port of entry are also suspended.

The agency said it has deployed additional personnel to the border due to multiple planned protests on both sides. The personnel included Customers and Border Protection officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents and Air and Marine agents recently sent to the region, according to a report on CNN. .

San Diego Police also readied on-duty officers Sunday afternoon to respond to the border division if needed.

The San Ysidro border crossing is one of the busiest ports of entry in the world, with more than 90,000 people crossing between San Diego and Tijuana on a daily basis.

Because of the activity on the border, the Metropolitan Transit System suspended Blue Line Trolley service at San Ysidro Transit Center. MTS also will not service the Virginia Transit Center. A temporary stop has been set up outside the transit station on Camino De La Plaza.

Customs and Border Protection said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
