Yo, gimme one wit, will youse?

Geno's, one of the best known cheesesteak joints in Philly, has thrust itself smack dab into the middle of the immigration debate, according to the Associated Press. Geno's owner Joseph Vento has posted signs telling his customers, "This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

"We're out to help these people, but they've got to help themselves, too", says Vento. The AP article didn't say if Vento defined whom he meant when he said "these people." But, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, you know whom he meant.

I have a problem with the signs. What about tourists? What if foreign countries retaliate? What if we can't order food in Cancun anymore because all the restaurants have posted signs that read "This is MEXICO: WHEN ORDERING SPEAK SPANISH." I can't speak Spanish. Or in France "This is FRANCE: WHEN ORDERING SPEAK FRENCH." I can't speak French either. Same thing could happen in Germany or Italy or wherever we may roam. See what you've started, Joseph! One other thing, Joe. If the people can't speak English, how the heck are they supposed to be able to read your darn sign? Duh.

Since most Philadelphians don't speak English, Mr. Vento might be open to a charge of discrimination. As pointed out in the AP article, a Philadelphian might order a cheesesteak by saying something like, "Yo, gimme a cheesesteak wit, will youse? ( "Wit" means with fried onions). That doesn't sound like English to me. Although many presidents have visited Geno's in the past, President Bush's lack of proficiency in the King's English might find him on the outside looking in.

When it comes to the immigration issue a lot of people aren't making much sense. There are those who keep insisting that we just deport all 13 million illegal immigrants that are currently in this country. Sure, just like we evacuated New Orleans. Those people were screaming to be picked up. Try evacuating 130 Superdomes, each full of 100,000 people, none of whom want to get on the bus. If you catch them (fat chance) and load the buses, the buses would reach from Detroit to El Paso!

"Send em' back." Some conservative members of Congress and talk radio hosts are stirring the pot with that line. Of course none of them has the foggiest idea of just how to go about it. A congressman actually suggested that all illegal immigrants be sent (oh, sure) to a place like Ellis Island to await proper entry. Is he nuts? The Isle of Manhattan wouldn't hold them all. I'm telling you, the lunatics are running the asylum.

On the flip side are those that propose a guest worker program as outlined by President Bush. Barney Frank refers to it as the "Welcome to America, now clean my bathroom" program. I call it the welcome to America, now get lost program. There's no way to track these guest workers once they get here. They will get lost in America and add to the already burgeoning illegal immigrant population. Need guest workers? We already have about 10 million guest workers working at minimal wages. Isn't that enough? Do you reckon any of them are working in the kitchen at Geno's? Yo, Joe, say it ain't so, will youse?

Legislators, contrary to what they say, don't seem interested in seriously punishing the real culprits, the businesses that hire illegal immigrants. That would do more than anything to curb the flow of illegal immigrants. The majority in the House passed a bill they knew had no chance of approval by the Senate. Why? Because it is their friends that hire these folks.

So the legislators will continue to talk tough and beat their chests until the November elections are over, then it will be business as usual; golfing with lobbyists in Scotland, giving tax breaks to their rich friends and looking the other way as illegal immigrants pour across our borders and go to work for their low wage paying union busting buddies.

Whew! They've done this for years. Now they want us to believe they're outraged and want to move em' up, head em' out. B.S. How will they fund this impossible task? More tax breaks, no doubt.

I've said it before. Secure the border; it's our right and obligation. Build the stupid fence if you must, but it's an ineffective waste of money and just more political posturing.

The answer is to hire and train about 10,000 more border patrol officers and equip them with the technology to get the job done. Then, and only then, I think most Americans would be willing to look more compassionately and sensibly at what to do with the illegal immigrants that are already here. The Senate bill is not as bad as it is being painted. It's flawed, but it's a start.

Amnesty rubs people the wrong way, because no one wants to reward people who entered our country illegally, and it didn't work before. But, we didn't secure the borders before. Amnesty is not exactly what the Senate and President Bush are calling for, but, many think it walks like a duck. Still, it does no good to bury our heads in the sand and pretend that we can deport 13 million people. That's just not possible. On that, I agree wit George W. Bush. Yo, that's a first, youse guys.

About the only thing he has right in this article is cracking down on the businesses that hire illegals and securing our borders.

Other than those 2 things, I don't think so.

I think his name got changed at Ellis Island. I'm sure when his ancestors arrived their surname was WacAdoo.

There is a flaw in his theory about deporting 13 million people. For a fact, Americans still out number the illegals and I can find droves of volunteers to ship them back to the border. I've got a cattle trailer that I'm willing to loan to the cause.
