Report: $81 million unspent by State Homeland Security Office

TULSA, Okla. A newspaper's analysis shows that about two-thirds of the 120 (m) million dollars in federal funding Oklahoma's Homeland Security Office has received in the past five years has not yet been spent.

The Tulsa World today reported that the state spent only about 40 (m) million of the 101 (m) million dollars it received from 2002 to 2005 and none of the 19-point-five (m) million dollars it received last month.

All told, the state Homeland Security office has about 81 (m) million dollars it has not yet spent.

State Homeland Security Director Kerry Pettingill says a significant portion of that total is dedicated to projects that are in the process of being finished.

He says officials are dealing with a tremendous volume of grant requests, equipment delivery and the gears of city governments, and that takes time.
