Ted Hayes Shouts Angrily Through Streets Of Chicago

CHICAGO -- A group of civil rights activists are sending a message to single mother Elvira Arellano, who is holed up in a Westside church.

They want her to come out and go home.

Since Aug. 15, Arellano has sought refuge in the church, refusing to surrender to federal authorities for deportation. Her decision has sparked a national debate and attracted the attention of the controversial Minutemen.

Outside the church near a statue of the Virgin Mary, incense fills the air as support for Arrellano is interrupted by the Minutemen.

Minuteman Ted Hayes is annoyed that Arrellano referred to herself as a modern day Rosa Parks.

"If she wants to use Rosa Parks as an example, so be it. But do it in Mexico!" exclaimed Ted Hayes. " They are hijacking my people's movement! They are hijacking our icons, Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks."

The reverend of the church where Arellano is hiding said that they are concerned for Arellano's safety.

"We felt this was more of a safety issue," said Rev. Walter Coleman. "We don't know what he would do. Minutemen, underneath, are a very violent, racist group. And (Arellano) deserves peace."

"I understand why she wants to be here. Unfortunately, she came illegally, got caught with Social Security fraud and was asked to be deported," said Minuteman Brian __.

__ said this case helps the Minutemen cause "9 to 1."

But those supporting Arellano drowned out the voice of those who don't.

"This is obviously a very small group of people who are funded by very large Republican interests," said Coleman.

Arellano never met Hayes Friday, but he said he is hopeful a meeting will happen this weekend, before the minutemen fly him back to Los Angeles, where he often speaks on behalf of the homeless
