(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Public support for Mexican president Vicente Fox remains steady in the last months of his tenure, according to two recent public opinion polls.

A survey published in Reforma put Fox’s approval rating at 64 per cent, unchanged since February. A study by Consulta Mitofsky found that 61.7 per cent of respondents agree with the way the president is governing the country.

Fox—of the National Action Party (PAN)—ended 71 years of uninterrupted rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the 2000 election, winning a six-year term with 42.5 per cent of the vote. The president has been affected by setbacks in getting a series of reform proposals through Congress.

On Jun. 2, Fox discussed possible strategies to curb illegal immigration into the United States, saying, "We are working hard so that our people have jobs, so they earn good salaries. We are going to do our work on the Mexican side."

In March, the Pew Hispanic Center calculated the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States at somewhere between 11.5 million to 12 million.

The next presidential election is scheduled for Jul. 2. Fox is scheduled to step down on Dec. 1, 2006.
