New indictment issued in Miss. immigration raid

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- The personnel director of a Mississippi company targeted in the nation's largest raid on undocumented workers faces a new federal indictment for allegedly hiring people he knew were illegal immigrants.

Jose Humberto Gonzalez was first indicted May 6 on conspiracy and employee fraud charges related to the raid on Howard Industries in Laurel on Aug. 25, 2008. Nearly 600 suspected illegal immigrants were detained.

A new 12-count indictment also accuses Gonzalez of aggravated identity theft for hiring people he allegedly knew had stolen identities.

The U.S. Attorney's office announced the indictment Wednesday in a news release.

Several of Gonzalez's attorneys did not immediately respond to messages. The U.S. Attorney's office didn't return a call.
