Immigration bill sent to Capitol

An immigration-enforcement bill is headed to negotiations between the state House and Senate.

The chambers have passed different versions of the bill but must agree on one version before the bill can go to the governor.

The bill says officers can check people’s immigration status during traffic stops or other encounters.

After the Senate passed the bill, city and county leaders said they worried about being sued by people who claim local governments aren’t properly enforcing immigration.

The House removed the possibility of lawsuits against local governments and inserted fines against employers hiring illegal immigrants.

Senators voted Wednesday to negotiate rather than accept the House version.

The bill is Senate Bill 2179.
