Dozens Involved In Wild Brawl In Nyack
Cops From 7 Departments Needed To Stop Massive Fight Involving Knives, Bats, Claw Hammers & Even An Ax

NYACK, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― Police say two people have been injured and five people arrested after dozens fought in the streets of the Rockland County village of Nyack.

Orangetown police say fights among 40 to 50 people broke out Wednesday afternoon.

It took police officers from seven departments to finally break up the fights, which continued across Nyack for an hour.

Police say some involved in the fight were armed with knives, bats and an ax.

They say one man was stabbed and hit with a claw hammer; a second person was hit in the head with a hammer.

Both victims were treated and released from a hospital.

Police say they have arrested five people, including one of the injured, on charges including disorderly conduct, menacing, trespassing and possession of marijuana.

Investigators believe the fights are gang-related

This report is very vague. That should set off some alarms.

    We need more info.

'Mini-riot' breaks out in Nyack; 2 possibly stabbed

    Steve Lieberman
    The Journal News

NYACK -- A fight erupted this afternoon between two gangs of people, leading to possibly two stabbings, several arrests and dozens of police officers chasing some young people around the village.

What one officer described as a "mini-riot" kicked off when competing groups of Spring Valley and Nyack teenagers converged at the Franklin Street park in South Nyack, police said.

A South Nyack-Grand View officer drove to the park. When the officer arrived, the teens left the area but a fight broke out at Franklin Street and Hudson Avenue a few blocks away in Nyack, police said.

"A large fight broke out with people supposedly showing weapons," South Nyack-Grand View Police Chief Robert Van Cura said today.

Orangetown Detective Lt. Jim Brown said several people were under arrest, and two people had possibly been stabbed.

At one point, there were reports of one person with a gun and at least one person, possibly a second, stabbed.

An Orangetown police officer chased down one young man and arrested him in Nyack after a report of a stabbing.

Clarkstown officers and Sheriff's Department officers entered the village, as well as officers from Ramapo and the state police.

Police chased after other teenagers, who ran across Franklin Street and Depew Avenue and up streets including Cedar Hill Avenue.

Police drove around telling children and adults to get inside their houses.

"It's like a mini-riot," Sheriff's Department Lt. William Barbera said. "We're chasing people. There were reports someone displayed a gun."

Orangetown police set up a command center behind the former Nyack High School.

A large group of people converged on Nyack Hospital, possibly because one of their friends was stabbed or injured and taken to the emergency room.
