Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley opened the shelter during June 2014, when immigrants from Central America started flooding across the Texas-Mexico border. Overwhelmed, the federal government started releasing women and children at the downtown McAllen bus station.

The number of people who sought shelter at Sacred Heart peaked in July 2014.
