House Democrats leading the charge for comprehensive immigration reform are taking a new tack in their efforts to send a bill to President Barack Obama next spring: Do it without Republicans.

Members say they are feeling newly emboldened to go their own way after the White House this month signaled a willingness to tackle the controversial issue next year. What’s more, Democrats recognize the issue is a politically sensitive one for Republicans hoping to curry favor with Hispanic voters in 2010.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), who heads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Immigration Task Force, said Hispanic lawmakers were taking notes during the health care reform debate, when House Republicans stood firm in their opposition to key aspects of the Democratic plan. In the end, he said, Democrats preserved the heart of their proposal by holding together, not by chipping away at core principles to win over Republicans.

“Had we negotiated with the Republicans on a bipartisan basis, we wouldn’t have had a public option, so there would have been nothing to mobilize us. [b]We did that with immigration reform in the past,â€

I think it is time we all make clear to our Congress critters that if they have any hand in trying to pass a CIR, they are also in danger of never having their cushy posts after the next election. And this bill (whatever it may be) will reward the breakers of current law, while the voting population has to pick up the tab and make accommodations for these criminals. Bordering on treason, IMO.

I certainly agree with you and many others of the same thinking.
We will have to work hard to change the landscape in Congress in 2010 and give these overbearing, threatening Democrats some competition.
It doesn't matter if they are Republican, Independent or some other party as long as their interest is for America and it's it people. We do not need people who walk all over the Constitution. We don't need people who are working to flood this country with illegal immigrants and other foreigners to take what jobs there are. Most of all we need people in Congress with Common Sense.

You can see one of the OBL's strategies in this story: Gutierrez's House amnesty legislation will be so extreme that Schumer's Senate amnesty bill, while still of course terrible, will seem "moderate" in comparison. Of course, we know that both of their bills -- and any "immigration reform" eminating from this Congress -- would be horrendous.
