Thread: IL - Learning to be tolerant trumps need to learn English

Here's an article in a Chicago suburban newspaper that deals with English as a second language in Wauconda.

Some of the things, both in the article and comments, I found interesting:

That comment immediately ignited an ugly debate fueled by insults, lies and hate, where anyone who suggests residents learn English was branded a racist, while anyone willing to tolerate anything less than all-English-all-the-time was a bed-wetting, liberal wimp or an "illegal alien."

The American people have been too tolerant, the illegals are in our country, they need to learn our language, not the other way around.

I just loved this comment from a reader:

"Two words Burt: "Legal" & "Assimilation". Talking in silly circles around those two concepts is disingenuous on your part. You lose a bet to Ruben Navarette or something?"

Yes, learning another language at a young age (before kids get stuffed into foreign language classes in school) stimulates the brain, but there is no need to pander to the languages all over the world by translating documents into every language. Every language has its dialects--the Russian spoken in Uzbekistan is different from that spoken in the Ukraine or Udmurtia.
And so many of the illegals here these days are not event proficient or literate in their own languages.
An acquaintance of mine, legally here and a US citizen from Honduras 35-years ago, has a habit of suddenly losing English skills when he needs to answer uncomfortable questions.
For anyone who has seen the Canadian parliament at work, everything needs to be translated from English to French and French to English. Can anyone imagine a session of Congress with debates being translated into every language in the world?

Vortex what is even worse is that to get government jobs in Canada you have to be bilingual. French is crammed down your throat in Ontario from grade school on yet the federal government jobs are taken by French Canadians. Ontario ended up maintaining it's white Anglo Saxon protestant background so those government jobs mostly go to them and visible minorities as they can sue. You don't have to look further than the Toronto Police. They pride themselves on being multiculutral but don't expect to become an assistant police chief or even Chief. They promted 4 to assistant chief 3 were white Anglo Saxon protestant background and 1 was black. Julian Fantino sued to become police chief in Toronto as he was one in a smaller city and won. This is why they are pushing Spanish and bilingualism so they get all the good jobs. People need to wake up and smell the coffee.
