ATLANTA — A Fulbright scholar who worked at Clemson University has been moved after her arrest on immigration charges.

Tharwat Alasadi, 29, was arrested July 20 on charges she violated immigration law and was being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center in Charlotte, N.C. She was transferred Friday to the Etowah County Jail in Etowah, Ala., according to a published report, citing a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official.

Alasadi taught Arabic while at Clemson on the scholarship. She is from Syria.

Her scholarship required her to return to Syria for two years, but she overstayed her visa while applying for a waiver, according to her husband, Taiyo Davis,

She will have a hearing before an immigration judge. The judge will decide whether she can stay in the United States or be deported to Syria. The hearing date was not available.

An official with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Greenville referred calls to Atlanta. A message left with an ICE official in Atlanta was not returned
