N.J.: Lieutenant Governor with Anti-Immigrant Past

El Diario/La Prensa, Posted: Nov 05, 2009

NEWARK, N. J. -- Immigrant rights organizations were alarmed by the election of Kim Guadagno as lieutenant governor of New Jersey because she has supported the implementation of 287 (g), which allows local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, reports El Diario/La Prensa. In her position as Monmouth County Sheriff, Guadagno last year requested that the county allow correctional officers to perform the functions of immigration officers. Last July, her application was accepted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the program began in September at the Monmouth County Jail, the first correctional facility to enforce the 287 (g) agreement in the Garden State. Emiliano Lemus, director of the Alliance for Latino Leadership's immigration committee, said his organization will continue to fight the program, but noted that some are afraid that Guadagno will now have the power to extend it across the state. However, MartĂ*n PĂ©rez, president of the Alliance, told El Diario/La Prensa that Guadagno had assured him that she opposes the implementation of 287(g) across the state. Republican Christopher Christie, who was elected Tuesday as New Jersey's next governor, has said that he does not agree with 287 (g) because it is not effective and can lead to abuses.
