A shooting in Nuevo Progreso temporarily shut down the Progreso International Bridge for about two hours on Saturday.

"We received a call from border patrol stating there was a shootout on the Mexican side unknowing which parties that were involved," Progreso Police Chief Alberto Rodriguez said.

Information on what exactly happened is still unclear.

According to local law enforcement officials in the Valley, there have been reports of numerous deaths.

But officials tell Action 4 News no Americans were among the dead or injured.

Witnesses said they saw Mexican army soldiers, right before they heard gunshots.

Those witnesses and Mexican media reports said the shooting lasted over an hour, and began just before 3:00pm.

Action 4 News has also learned Mexican police have taken three men into custody.

In the meantime, Progreso police say they want to keep their residents safe.

"We’re gonna be keeping the peace for the citizens of Progreso and many transit citizens that pass through Progreso," Chief Rodriguez said.
