Day laborers hired by Rockland village say they're undocumented

    July 17, 2007, 2:28 PM EDT

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (AP) _ Day laborers who reportedly said they were illegal immigrants were hired Tuesday by a suburban village for a construction project.

Mayor George Darden of Spring Valley said the men were not asked about their immigration status and deserved the jobs "as much as anybody else."

The Journal News reported on its Internet site that a Department of Public Works employee picked up two day laborers on Route 59 _ a common gathering place _ and drove them to a Main Street project, where they were put to work cleaning out a building before demolition.

The workers "said they were in the country illegally," the report said.

Darden told The Associated Press that the village did not know if the men were illegal and added, "These people live in Spring Valley and I am the mayor of all the people of Spring Valley. They have families like anyone else. I am not going to stick my head in the sand and pretend they're not here."

In an apparent reference to Congressional inaction in immigration legislation, Darden said, "The federal government has to make up their mind and they shouldn't expect Spring Valley to make up their mind for them."

It is against the law to knowingly hire illegal immigrants, a statute that is widely flouted, although not by government agencies. It is a common in suburban towns and villages to see groups of day laborers, mostly immigrants and many illegal, waiting on sidewalks or at organized pickup areas, hoping to get work with contractors and homeowners who need help with construction or landscaping.

Perhaps someone in the area would report them for hiring illegal workers. It is against the law and the government is not above the law.

This is only a couple of towns away from where I live. I'm calling ICE and asking how this Mayor gets away with blatantly breaking the law! Then I calling the Mayor to inform him I'm reporting him to ICE!

Just as an update. I just got off the phone with the Mayor's office of Spring Valley. The women who answered the phone was really upset when I said I would be contacting ICE. She asked if she could have the Mayor call me to explain. I told her he could do all his explaining to ICE. When she was hanging up I heard her say to someone " The Mayor is in hot water that article is already out and ths guy is reporting it to ICE!"

I don't think anyone is proposing that you stick your "head in the sand and pretend they're not there." However, I am proposing that you do something to get rid of those illegally residing in Spring Valley and this country!
