TIJUANA – A man suspected of stabbing to death his wife and mother-in-law in Los Angeles County on Tuesday was captured a few hours later in Rosarito Beach, authorities announced.

Baja California police identified him as Jonathan Scott Chacon, 23, a Los Angeles native.

In a statement, state police said that Chacon is suspected of having committed the killings in Redondo Beach in the early hours of Tuesday.

Alfredo Arenas, the liaison to U.S. authorities, said that Baja California police began to search for the suspect, believed to be armed, as soon as the department received word that he might be heading south of the border.

State police located him in Boulevard Benito Juárez in downtown Rosarito Beach. Arenas said that Chacon tried to flee when he observed police closing in, but that he was captured.

Agents from the U.S. Marshall’s Office and Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed his identity as the suspect in the double homicide. Chacon was turned over to Mexican federal authorities, who were to turn him over to their American counterparts.

Chacon was handed off by Mexican authorities to Redondo Beach police at the border around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was quickly extradited because he is a citizen with a U.S. passport, Hoffman said.
