Woman facing homicide charges after car crash that killed her cousin

A 20-year-old woman is in jail facing vehicular homicide charges after the car she was driving early Sunday crashed out in the county, killing her cousin in the car.

Killed in the one-car crash was Osvaldo Antonio Garcia, 17, of Pierce. The Weld County Coroner’s office said he was staying with cousins in Pierce, which included the driver of the car, Maria Garcia, 20. The coroner’s office said Osvaldo Garcia’s parents came to Greeley from Mexico after their son died.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Weld County roads 43 and 88, about five miles east of Pierce. It happened at 4 a.m. Sunday.

Maria Garcia, whose birthday is Monday, was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving, no proof of insurance, and for not having a valid driver’s license. The Weld County Jail log also shows she is being held for immigration officials.

According to the Colorado State Patrol reports, Maria Garcia was driving the 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva south on County Road 88 when she apparently lost control of the car.

It ran off the right side of the road, spun around and hit a power pole on the side where Osvaldo Garcia was sitting, then hit a road sign and a telephone box. Osvaldo Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was the first motor vehicle death in Weld County this year.
